The telecommunications industry in the UK is on the precipice of a major shift, dubbed as 'The Great Britain Switch Off', led by BT. This switch-off entails a transition from the legacy analogue telephone networks to the more advanced and efficient Digital Voice services.
As a leading association representing Internet Service Providers (ISPs), we at UK WISPA understand that this transition presents both challenges and opportunities for our members.
Understanding Digital Voice
Digital Voice, also known as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), is a technology that enables voice communication over digital networks. Unlike traditional analogue telephone lines, Digital Voice services utilise the internet or private IP networks for transmitting voice communication.
Some benefits of this technology include improved call quality, reduced latency, and increased reliability. As we prepare for the full adoption of this technology by 2025, we believe it's critical to equip our members with the right tools and knowledge.
Addressing ISPs' Challenges
Our ISP members will face several challenges during this transition. These may include upgrading infrastructure, training staff on the new technology, managing deployment of new devices and ensuring minimal disruption for customers.
We're keen on facilitating dialogue and providing resources to address these challenges. In line with this, we're excited to announce a webinar on navigating the Digital Voice transition, where we'll dive deeper into these issues.
Customer Impact
The shift to Digital Voice will profoundly influence customers, as it may require the replacement of their current analogue phones with digital counterparts compatible with the new system. ISPs will play a crucial role in this transition, providing essential guidance and support to end customers and ensuring the switch is smooth, causing minimal disturbance to their day-to-day activities.
We understand that this topic may raise many questions. That's why we're inviting you to a webinar specifically focusing on the Digital Voice transition, hosted in partnership with Euroroute Network Solutions. This session is intended to provide an informative platform for knowledge sharing and address doubts and concerns our members may have.
The Role of Hardware in Digital Voice Transition
One of the areas we're focusing on is the choice of Customer Premises Equipment (CPE). Ensuring a smooth transition for your customers requires digital voice-ready equipment.
Euroroute Network Solutions have over 20 years experience in the sector and are the UK distributor for the AVM FRITZ!Box range of routers and digital phones. Notably, these devices are designed to help facilitate a smooth transition by supporting seamless integration with digital telephony standards.
With features such as an integrated analogue phone port, the FRITZ!Box allows your existing end-users to continue using their current analogue phones during the transition, thus minimising potential disruption.
Managing Devices Remotely
Efficient device management and support are critical during this transition. Technologies like the TR-069 protocol can simplify the deployment process, reduce the need for on-site technician visits, and ensure a consistent, high-quality experience for customers.
